Deer and moose rifles for Maine

Maine deer hunting is a big-woods game in the north and a farm-edge game in the south, and the rifle that suits one does not always suit the other. Moose is a lottery event that most hunters get once. This guide covers the 2026 seasons as the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has published them, the rules on legal firearms, and what actually works in Maine cover.

The 2026 deer seasons

• Residents-only day: Saturday, October 31, 2026.
• Firearms season: November 2 to November 28, 2026.
• Youth deer day: October 23 and 24, 2026.
• Statewide muzzleloader: November 30 to December 5, 2026, with an additional week in the southern and central districts.
• Archery: regular archery October 3 to October 30, with the expanded archery season running from September 12 in designated areas.

There is no Sunday hunting anywhere in Maine, so a 27-day firearms season gives you 23 days afield. Check the current season sheet before you plan a trip, because the department adjusts the calendar each year.

Districts and permits

Maine is divided into 29 Wildlife Management Districts. Your district decides your antlerless opportunity, your moose odds and, in some cases, your season dates. Northern districts such as 1 through 6 cover the border country and the North Maine Woods; 8, 9 and 10 take in the Moosehead and Katahdin country; 23, 25 and 26 hold the farm-woodland belt around Bangor, Belfast and Augusta; 20, 21, 22 and 24 cover the south.

Buck hunting is open to anyone with a licence. Antlerless deer are controlled by permit, drawn by lottery and allocated district by district, with a handful of districts open to either-sex harvest on the base licence in a given year. Read the current antlerless allocation before you decide where to hunt: it moves every season with winter severity.

Legal firearms and ammunition

Maine's rules are short but they matter. Deer may not be hunted with a firearm using .17 or .22 rimfire cartridges, except that .22 rimfire magnum is allowed. That rules out the .22 Long Rifle and the .17 HMR for deer. Any centerfire rifle cartridge is legal. Muzzleloaders must be .40 caliber or larger and capable of firing only a single charge. Some coastal towns are restricted to shotgun and archery during the firearms season, so check the deer rules page for the town you are hunting.

You must wear two pieces of solid hunter orange, a hat and an outer garment, during the firearms season. The department defines the colour precisely, so a faded vest from the 1980s may not qualify.

Rifles for the north woods

Shots in the spruce and fir of the border country and the North Maine Woods are usually short and often taken at a walking deer. The classic Maine rifles are still the right answer.

• .30-30 lever gun: light, fast to the shoulder, deadly inside 150 yards. Still the most common deer rifle in the county.
• .308 Winchester: short action, flat enough for a field edge, cheap to feed and available in every rifle made.
• .30-06 Springfield: the do-everything cartridge; loads from 150 to 220 grains cover deer, bear and moose.
• .270 Winchester and 6.5 Creedmoor: for the Aroostook potato ground and the Kennebec valley farmland where you can see across a field.
• 7mm-08 and .243: light recoil for young and small-framed hunters, with a good deer bullet.
• .35 Remington and .45-70: heavy, slow bullets that punch through alder and cedar without deflecting.

Barrel length matters more here than ballistics. A 20-inch barrel on a light bolt rifle or a carbine lever gun carries better through the cover than a 26-inch magnum, and a sling you actually use beats another 200 feet per second.

Moose

Moose permits come through an annual lottery. The 2026 application window ran from April 1 to May 18, with the drawing held on June 20 at the Acton fairgrounds. Applicants pick the districts and the seasons they will accept and name a sub-permittee. The 2026 seasons were September 28 to October 3 and October 12 to 17 for bull-only hunts, and October 26 to 31 for antlerless.

For a 900-pound animal at short range, use enough gun. The .30-06 with 180 or 200 grain bullets, the .308 with heavy bullets, the .300 Winchester Magnum, the .338, the .35 Whelen and the .45-70 all have a long record in Maine. Bullet construction matters more than raw speed: pick a bonded or partition-style bullet that holds together through the shoulder. Practise off shooting sticks, because most moose are taken standing in a cut or on a road.

Optics and the last half hour

Legal shooting time in Maine runs from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, and in November that means genuinely dark woods. A 1-6x or 2-7x scope with a 24 to 36 millimetre objective gathers plenty of light, keeps the rifle light and gives you a field of view wide enough to find a moving deer. Low-power variables and red dots have taken over the lever-gun world for exactly this reason.

Getting set up

Build around the rifle you will carry all day, not the one that groups best off a bench.
